BOMB TRANSPORT TRAILER
The basic bomb handling system and sled described above reduce the risk of moving a suspected device from the point found to the street. The Bomb Transport Trailer completes the bomb team's removal capability by providing a highly efficient method for moving the suspected device over the road to a safe disposal area. The trailer combines a high level of protection with a low weight of 1500 lbs. With its additional features of remote loading and provisions for carrying all parts of the basic bomb handling system, the trailer becomes a complete bomb handling unit on wheels.
The trailer body is made of molded fiberglass. Compartments are molded into the body so that all components of the system can be stowed and carried in a safe, orderly manner and can be readily checked or put into use. A tailored Nylon cover is provided to protect the components and is held in place by elasticized cords which engage hooks around the periphery of the trailer.
The trailer frame is welded steel channel. The 4 trailer wheels are independently suspended with their own spring and axle assembly. This allows the trailer to have a completely clear area under the bomb trailer basket.
Working behind the protection of the armored "sled," which is part of the personal equipment carried with the trailer system, operators can manipulate the recovery of the suspect device with maximum personal safety and protection of property. Body armor, body shields and head and face protection is provided as part of the trailer system.
The trailer is equipped with a lifting device which permits the bomb handling team to load a bomb basket into the trailer basket from as far as 100 feet away. The boom is equipped with a 4-strand, pre-rigged pulley attached. The clevis piece may be placed on either side of the trailer, the boom placed on the clevis, and the pulley then attached to the frame.
When the bomb handler pulling the bomb basket by the 100' line reaches the trailer, the tow rope is passed through an indexing pulley on the side of the trailer (as shown in the illustration). The handler then continues to pull his line in any convenient direction while the pulley automatically indexes the basket to the proper position for engagement with the boom hook.
The following photo sequence illustrates the hooking of the bomb basket by the boom (Figure 1), the raising of the bomb basket to a position above the trailer basket (Figure 2), and the completed loading sequence with the loaded bomb basket safely stowed within the trailer basket for transport (Figure 3).
