Explosive and/or Volatile Transport Systems

Open Bottom Basket

This illustrates the second of the three methods for approaching a suspected device. The open bottom basket is manually lowered over the device. With this method the degree of safety provided by the bomb basket is utilized more quickly. In addition, a much greater degree of safety is provided if a booby-trapped device should explode from initial movement. The open bottom basket is also useful if a device is found in an open area where there are no overhead supports for the lifting clamps.

After the basket is over the device, the drawstring net built into the open bottom basket is pulled from a distance of 50' and the net secures the device. With a second 50' built-in line, the net securing the device is lifted to the center of the basket. The basket is then towed in the same manner as the closed bottom bomb basket.

The third method of approach is with the bomb handling sled previously described in this booklet. Utilizing the greater safety of the bomb sled, the handler uses a pole to drop the drawstring over the device, or may use a single or double pole system to maneuver the device into a bomb basket for remote towing as described above.
